Tides 'Still motion'
Exploring the motion within stillness
Delighted to announce the latest release on Evergreen, ‘Still motion’ by Tides. This is available as pay-what-you-want digital download, and on upcycled cassette with hand-printed artwork. Tides is an ambient artist creating intimate soundscapes rooted in memory, emotion, and the quiet moments between. Now based in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, his music gently reflects the environments around him. Rural textures, distant light, and stillness all feature, while leaning heavily into themes of nostalgia and personal reflection.
Blending organic instrumentation, tape loops, and minimal processing, Tides invites listeners into a space where past and present blur, where sound becomes a vessel for half-remembered places and feelings. With a background spanning jazz, funk, and heavier experimental genres, his ambient work is shaped by a lifelong curiosity for sound and its emotional resonance. Previous releases on labels such as Whitelabrecs, SoundGhost, Dewtone, Mystery Circles, and Shimmering Moods trace his ongoing journey through gentle sonic terrain.
This release is some of his earliest work under the Tides project and feels like a bridge to who he has since become musically. These tracks were written during a difficult period, between 2018–2020, when his mental health was at a real low point. Much of that time was shaped by the emotional strain of trying to have a child through IVF, which left him feeling drained and untethered. Time stood still whilst everything around him moved. In moments of stillness, watching the world sway, trees bending in the wind, people passing by, and seasons quietly shifting. A growing realisation that time doesn’t just pass us by; it moves around us, dances with us, and sometimes leaves us suspended in reflection.
This album captures that feeling. The in-between. The pause. The motion within stillness. Feelings of a particular time and place. Writing this album became part of how he began to recover, and now carries a quiet kind of beauty born from that hardship. With some distance and healing, it finally feels right to share it; releasing it now feels like a way of letting go. The tracks were all recorded to various forms of tape (multitrack and portable machines), using a range of instruments and FX.
